Here’s a quick shot of my “draft” top for the dining room table. I’m playing with the paints a bit, yah? Wondering what you think – I’m on the fence about the whole idea but the more I play, the more this stormy landscape comes into being. Just like when I write poetry, I can’tContinue reading “This Week in the Shop: Painting a Table Top”

The Art Crate Lockers
Over the past month my mind (and workshop) has fissured into a melting pot of tools, projects, class planning and plan ol’ creative fury. I have nothing to show for my troubles right now. I have recently completed a “house” style table – craftsman lines with painted accents – and I failed to take picturesContinue reading “The Art Crate Lockers”
This Week in the Shop: Don’t Touch My Blue Suede Chair
A quick sawdust update: I’ve been working finishing up a personal project this week and doing a little legwork for my next piece. In May, two friends of mine became married to each other. I got to see them meet, watch them fall in love and stand up and give a hell yeah! at theContinue reading “This Week in the Shop: Don’t Touch My Blue Suede Chair”
Tool Primer: Painting A Room
In February, I learned the necessity of insurance, family, cash-in-your-pocket and good-quality plumbing. My house flooded – and I’m talking spectacular water-from-the-ceiling, I-hope-this-never-happens-to-a-house-I-own flood. Every room in my house received flood damage. We moved out for a month and the landlord gave us a new house (ok, his insurance did). I will say this: weContinue reading “Tool Primer: Painting A Room”
(School) Year in Review: Art Car 2011
As I gear up for summer program, I will be taking a little time to reflect on my past year. My bosses at work have kept me on as a teacher, although I smell the terrifying and exciting smell of change in the air. On May 22nd, my students (and I) participated in the 2011Continue reading “(School) Year in Review: Art Car 2011”
This Week in the Shop: Reading Stand from Salvaged Wainscoting
Here’s my latest workshop creation. It’s a small reading stand for my wife’s grandmother (or rather, mine too, I guess). The curly flame maple isn’t actual wood, but some sort of printed-Formica laid over some pretty expensive chipboard. The Formica/chipboard came off a local office’s wainscoting, and I just had to grab a coupla panels. Continue reading “This Week in the Shop: Reading Stand from Salvaged Wainscoting”
This Week in the Shop: A Granite Trestle Table (for Grillin’)
There’s a saying in electronic/maker/hacker circles. Sometimes, you just need enough junk before you can start doing cool stuff. You need a “critical mass” of stuff. This trestle table came together because of a “critical mass” of junk. The pressure treated base was scrap pieces from a variety of sources (work, my own projects, etc)Continue reading “This Week in the Shop: A Granite Trestle Table (for Grillin’)”
The Things they Carried (Cool Tools Everyday Carry Contest)
Kevin Kelly, editor of Wired magizine, runs an interesting blog on Cool Tools. He recently held a contest looking for tools which are carried everyday. This year, I’ve been refining my tool belt to carry the tools that make my job run. So let’s start, shall we? From right to left: Canvas Tool Pouch: It’sContinue reading “The Things they Carried (Cool Tools Everyday Carry Contest)”
This Week in the Shop: A Bed Frame
UPDATE: You can pick up PDF plans for this project at http://www.woodshopcowboy.com. More plans coming soon! A little over five weeks ago, a plumbing issue at my residence caused a rather large flood. Since then, my family and I have been staying with relatives. The workshop has been closed for personal projects until further notice.Continue reading “This Week in the Shop: A Bed Frame”
This Week in the Shop: Refurbish A Children’s Bike
The 16″ childrens’ bike project has cleared my outbox. I’m busy in reflection mode with the students, examining all the different parts of our work for ways to improve the product, teaching and quality next time. I thought the bike itself came out well: If you’ve followed the blog over the past two months, thenContinue reading “This Week in the Shop: Refurbish A Children’s Bike”
